The thresholds: 7, 10, and 4 for new drivers

A driver who collects 7 or more penalty points within one year is summoned to a lecture on the consequences of breaking traffic rules, and the driving licence is withheld until they attend it (Article 225, paragraphs (5) and (6)). At 10 or more points within a year the licence is taken for 30 days and returned only after the driver re-sits the traffic-rules exam; if the driver reaches 10 points again within two years, it is taken for 60 days.

For a new driver the threshold is far lower: anyone who obtains a category B licence for the first time and collects 4 penalty points in the first two years loses it — the licence is annulled and the driver is treated as not having passed the driving test (Article 184, paragraph (3)). That is two offences of two points each, for example a red light and an excess of more than 20 km/h.

On the result the law is cited in Bosnian, as it is written in the gazette: „čl.“ is an article, „st.“ a paragraph and „t.“ an item.

How many points each offence carries

Most of the serious offences carry 2 points: an excess of more than 20 km/h, a red light, alcohol above 0.8 g/kg, drugs, refusing a test, and wanton driving. Alcohol over 0.3 up to 0.8 g/kg carries „one or two“ points — the number is set by the deciding authority, so the calculator then shows the total as a range.

The phone and the seat belt have carried no penalty points since 27 May 2026, where no accident was caused. For a child under 12 in the front seat the law does provide points but does not state how many — so the calculator does not count them, and says so explicitly.

Where one act constitutes several offences, the penalty is imposed for the offence carrying the higher number of points (Article 225, paragraph (4)) — the points are not added together in that case. The calculator treats every offence you add as a separate decision.

When points are entered and when they are erased

Points are entered only once the misdemeanour order or the court decision is final and enforceable, and they are erased 12 months after the day they were determined (Article 225, paragraph (3), and Article 226, paragraph (4)). So enter only points that have not yet been erased — the calculator tracks no dates.

Republika Srpska has its own penalty points in its entity law (one, two or four, at most four for concurrent offences), but prescribes no thresholds for them. The legislation does not say whether they count towards the state thresholds, so the calculator does not count them.
