How a discount is calculated

new price = price × (100 − discount) ÷ 100

A discount is a percentage subtracted from the original price. Multiply the price by the discount percent and divide by 100 — that is your savings; subtract it from the original price to get the new price.

In reverse, when you know the old and new prices, the discount is the difference divided by the old price, multiplied by 100.

Example

A jacket costs 160 KM with 35% off. The savings are 160 × 35 ÷ 100 = 56 KM, so the new price is 104 KM. In reverse: a drop from 160 KM to 104 KM equals a discount of (160 − 104) ÷ 160 × 100 = 35%.

Watch out for stacked discounts

"An extra 20% off already reduced by 30%" is not 50% off. First 30% applies (70% of the price remains), then 20% off that (80% of the remainder) — you pay 56% of the original, so the real discount is 44%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off?

Multiply the price by 0.30 to get the savings, then subtract from the price. For example, 30% off 90 KM saves 27 KM, so the new price is 63 KM.

How do I check what discount was applied?

Subtract the new price from the old, divide by the old price and multiply by 100. From 250 to 175 KM the discount is 30%.

Do two discounts add up?

No — consecutive discounts multiply rather than add. 20% off an already 30% reduced price is 44% off in total, not 50%.
