How it works

Drag your JPG files onto the area above, or pick them from your device. The browser decodes each image and writes it out as a PNG, pixel by pixel, with no additional compression at all.

There is no quality slider here because PNG has nothing to lose — it is a lossless format, so the result is faithful to the last pixel of what the JPG contained.

The result is almost always larger than the original, often several times over. That is normal: the JPG reached its size by discarding information, while PNG has to record faithfully everything it finds, including the artefacts of the JPG compression itself.

Converting does not bring back lost detail

This is the most important sentence on the page. JPG is a lossy format: the moment an image was first saved as a JPG, some information was permanently discarded. Converting to PNG preserves the image perfectly from that point on, but it cannot recover what is no longer there.

If your photo shows haloing around edges, banded gradients in the sky, or blurred small text, those will survive into the PNG exactly as they are — simply recorded in a lossless format. No tool, this one included, can reconstruct detail that is not in the file.

So why is this conversion useful? Because it stops further degradation. Every re-save of a JPG costs a little more quality, so if you plan to edit an image across several steps, it makes sense to move it to PNG first and work there. The same applies whenever a program, form or system explicitly demands a PNG.

If you need a transparent background, note that converting does not create one. PNG supports transparency, but your JPG has none, so the background stays exactly as it was.

Your images stay on your device

The conversion runs entirely inside your browser. The images you pick are not sent anywhere: this page has nowhere to receive them, so it has nobody to pass them on to.

Nothing from the file itself reaches our visit statistics — not the name, not the size, not the dimensions, not the content. We record only that a conversion started and whether it succeeded, the same as on any other page.

To be precise: the page still loads ads and visitor measurement like the rest of the site. The claim is about the contents of your files, which never leave the browser.

When you close or refresh the page, the selected images and results are gone from the browser's memory. Nothing is kept for next time.
