How to calculate exterior wall area — gables first, openings after

Exterior wall area is calculated in three steps, and the order matters: the perimeter of the house times the wall height, then plus the gables, and only then minus the openings. For a 10 × 8 m house with 6 m walls the perimeter is 36 m and the gross wall 216 m². Two 8 × 2 m gables add 16 m², so the gross facade is 232 m². Eight 1.2 × 1.2 m windows and a 1.0 × 2.1 m door come to 13.62 m² of openings, leaving 218.38 m² net. Forget the gables and you get 202.38 m² — 16 m² less, and that is exactly the difference you pay for.
The formula in three steps
gross wall = 2 × (length + width) × height · gross facade = gross wall + gables · net = gross facade − openings
The first step is the perimeter: for a 10 × 8 m footprint that is 2 × (10 + 8) = 36 m. Times the 6 m wall height it gives 216 m² of gross wall. Measure the height to the top of the wall, not to the ridge — the triangles above it are a separate item.
The second step is the gables. A gable is a triangle, so its area is width times height divided by two: 8 × 2 ÷ 2 = 8 m² each, and two of them give 16 m². The gross facade is then 232 m².
Only the third step is the openings. Eight 1.2 × 1.2 m windows come to 11.52 m² and the 1.0 × 2.1 m front door to another 2.1 m² — 13.62 m² in total. The net area is 232 − 13.62 = 218.38 m².
Measure openings at the structural opening, not the frame or the glass. An opening that repeats goes in as one row with a quantity.

On an ordinary house the order looks irrelevant — addition and subtraction can be swapped either way. It stops being irrelevant in one case: when the openings are larger than the rectangular walls themselves.
Take the deliberately extreme case this was tested with: a small 4 × 3 m building with 2.5 m walls has 35 m² of rectangular wall. Enter six 2.5 × 2.5 m openings into it and that is 37.5 m² — more wall than exists. A calculation that deducts first stops at zero and reports that there is nothing to insulate.
But the building has two 3 × 4 m gables, i.e. 12 m². The right order gives a gross facade of 47 m² and a net of 9.5 m² — nine and a half square metres of real wall that still has to be done. That is why the tool adds the walls and the gables first and only then deducts.
If the tool tells you the openings swallow the whole facade, that is not a result but an invitation to re-check your input — usually an opening entered in centimetres instead of metres.
What a forgotten gable costs
Gables are the item people forget most often, because from the street they read as part of the roof rather than as wall. On this house they carry 16 m² of the total 218.38 m², a little over 7% of the job.
Their size grows quickly with the pitch of the roof: a 1.5 m gable carries 12 m², a 2 m one 16, and a 3 m one already 24 m². On a house with two gables the difference between a shallow and a steep roof is around ten square metres, which in 3 m² packs is a difference of four packs.
The table below shows the same house at five gable heights, with a 5% reserve and a pack covering 3 m². Both the reserve and the coverage are examples here: the reserve is a free planning setting, and how many square metres one pack covers is printed on your own pack, because it depends on the board thickness too.

Deduct windows, doors, balcony doors and garage doors — anything that stays untreated. Do not deduct the small stuff: shutter boxes, outlets, service penetrations and brackets, because the work goes around them anyway.
An opening is deducted at its full area, which assumes the reveals around it are not included. They are usually done in a thinner board and consume both material and labour — the tool does not estimate them, so add them yourself if your calculation needs them.
On this house the windows alone are 11.52 m²: deduct only the windows and the net is 220.48 m², deduct only the door and it is 229.9 m². Neither deduction is large on its own, but together they come to 13.62 m² — roughly one gable's worth.
If you are doing one side of the house or an extension, the perimeter never enters the picture: measure that surface directly and enter it in the “I know the area” mode.
From square metres to packs
Square metres are only half the answer — you buy packs, and packs round up. On 218.38 m² with a 5% reserve the figure to cover is 229.3 m², and that is what the order is built on.
Because pack coverage varies so much, the table below gives a range rather than a number: the same job is 115 packs at 2 m² each or 39 packs at 6 m². The last column shows the reason this article exists — how many packs would be missing if the gables had been forgotten.
The 5% reserve is an editable planning starting point, not a norm and not a prescribed quantity. It covers cuts, breakage and overlaps, not a measuring mistake.

What the tool deliberately does not estimate
Mesh overlap is not counted separately. The lap width depends on the system, the roll and the set-out, and there is nothing citable — so the reserve is what covers it, and the tool says so instead of pretending it is included.
The material type and its thickness change no number in the calculation. They are labels carried into the assumptions and the share link, because the same number of square metres stays the same whatever goes onto the wall; what changes is how many square metres fit in one pack, and that is read off the pack.
And finally, this is an estimate for planning a purchase. An uneven wall, an old layer being stripped, or an irregular footprint all consume more than the geometry says.
